东方朔（公元前154～前93） 西汉辞赋家。字曼倩。平原厌次（今山东惠民）人。武帝即位,征四方士人,东方朔上书自荐，诏拜为郎。后任常侍郎、太中大夫等职。他性格诙谐，言词敏捷，滑稽多智，常在武帝前谈笑取乐，"然时观察颜色，直言切谏"（《汉书·东方朔传》）。武帝好奢侈，起上林苑，东方朔直言进谏，认为这是"取民膏腴之地，上乏国家之用，下夺农桑之业,弃成功,就败事"（《汉书·东方朔传》）。他曾言政治得失，陈农战强国之计，但武帝始终把他当俳优看待,不得重用,于是写《答客难》、《非有先生论》，以陈志向和发抒自己的不满。
《答客难》以主客问答形式，说生在汉武帝大一统时代，"贤不肖"没有什么区别，虽有才能也无从施展，"用之则为虎,不用则为鼠",揭露了统治者对人才随意抑扬，并为自己鸣不平。此文语言疏朗，议论酣畅，刘勰称其"托古慰志，疏而有辨"(《《文心雕龙》·杂文》)。扬雄的《解嘲》、班固的《答宾戏》、张衡的《应间》等，都是模仿它的作品。《非有先生论》假托有一非有先生在吴作官，三年"默然无言"，吴王问他，他趁机用历史上许多诤谏遇祸的故事，启发吴王，劝谕帝王应虚心纳谏。篇中几个"谈何容易"，感慨万端，意味深长，是传神之笔。另有骚体赋《七谏》，因袭楚辞，无甚新意。此外，《神异经》、《十洲记》等书，曾托东方朔名流传，实际非他所作。
