猎人钩葛的今世和前生
南传法句经故事
“若犯无邪者，清净无染者，
罪恶向愚人，如逆风扬尘。”
【恶品第(125 偈颂)】《南传法句经》

此一偈颂，是佛陀在祗树给孤独园的时候，为一个自食恶果的猎人钩葛而说的。
祗树给孤独园附近，有一个名叫钩葛的猎人，生性残暴，又不通情理。一天早上，钩葛带了弓箭，领着自己养的一群猎狗到森林去打猎。路上遇见一位托钵的比丘，钩葛很生气的自语道：“今天要倒楣了，一大早就碰到一个光头，我看今天什么也猎不到了。”说罢很生气的往森林里走去。
比丘捧着钵到村子里走了一圈，找一个静处，将乞到的食物吃了，准备返回寺里。
这边，钩葛在森林里猎了一整天，毫无斩获，气闷闷的带着猎犬往回家的路上走，谁知又碰上了这位比丘，不禁火冒三丈，大骂道：“我一大早就碰见你这光头，所以倒楣，连一只小免子也没逮到，谁知回来又碰见你，不知又要倒什么楣了。”说罢就要叫他的猎狗咬比丘，将比丘吃掉。比丘赶紧说道：“有话好说，我并没有得罪你，你不要冲动啊！”
钩葛那管三七二十一，就放开猎狗。比丘只得赶紧脱身逃命，跑到一棵树下，爬了上去。钩葛的猎狗咬他不着，只得在树下徘徊绕圈子，对着树上的比丘狂吠。此时钩葛赶到，他说：“今天你跑不掉了！”随即拿起箭头向上猛刺比丘的脚底，比丘哀哀求饶。钩葛仍然不理，非得置他于死，不肯罢休。
比丘双手紧握树枝，两个脚底不停地闪躲钩葛的矛头，痛苦不堪。身上的袈裟渐渐松了，终至落下，从头到脚将钩葛罩住，钩葛来不及挣脱。那些猎狗看到袈裟，以为是比丘，猛地扑过去，一下子将钩葛咬得动弹不得。比丘见状赶忙折了一根枯枝向猎狗们丢去，猎狗抬头看到树上的比丘，才知道它们咬了自己的主人，逃入森林。
比丘这才从树上下来，看见袈裟沾满了鲜血，钩葛已然一命呜呼，心中非常难过，他想：因为我的袈裟掉下的缘故，才使得猎人丧命。他怀疑自己是否犯了杀戒，因此来到佛前，将经过向佛陀禀告一遍。
佛陀安慰他说：“善哉比丘！你没有丝毫过错，那个猎人不应该伤害没有过错的出家人，他如此作为是自食其果；而且，他不止这一世伤害无辜，前辈子也是。”佛陀因此又说了有关钩葛前世的故事：
很久以前，有个医生，为人医病赚取医药费谋生。后来时运不济，病人渐渐少了，医生赚不到医疗费，贫穷潦倒。有一天，这位医生到乡下，看到一群天真无邪的小孩在一起玩耍嬉戏，心里于是起了一个不好的念头：“我要是能让这些小孩都被蛇咬了，我就可以为他们医治，而赚到很多医药费。”
于是他将小孩子们带到一棵树下，在树根的枯洞里有只睡着的蛇，蛇头露在洞口，看起来就像蜥蜴的头。医生告诉小孩子们说：“这是蜥蜴，你们抓来玩没关系。”小孩不知天高地厚，就依着医生的话，捉住蜥蜴的颈部，谁知当他握住之后，才发现原来是只蛇，蛇身很快地缠住小孩的手肘。小孩非常害怕，情急之下将蛇往医生的头上丢去，这只蛇立即缠住医生的脖子，一口咬住医生的颈部，医生脸色发青，立刻中毒而死。
这个医生就是钩葛的前生。“比丘们！一个人如果常常做出伤天害理、伤害无辜的事，终究会果报还诸自身，自作自受的；就像逆风而起的灰尘，终究还是扑向自己的脸上。”
佛陀为重宣此义而说偈言：
“若犯无邪者，清净无染者，罪恶向愚人，如逆风扬尘。”
很多比丘闻偈已，当下都证得阿罗汉果，余者亦同沾法益。

The Old Cat
An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.
Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."
老猫
一位老妇有只猫，这只猫很老，它跑不快了，也咬不了东西，因为它年纪太大了。一天，老猫发现一只老鼠，它跳过去抓这只老鼠，然而，它咬不住这只老鼠。因此，老鼠从它的嘴边溜掉了，因为老猫咬不了它。

A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road, he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said, "I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." Then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.
He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, "I cannot go to the rich man's house today, for I cannot get over the river."
He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.
Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

The City Mouse and the Country Mouse
Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in the country." So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the fieldYou should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."
The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid.
After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."
城里老鼠和乡下老鼠

过了一会儿，他们出来了。当他们出来时，乡下老鼠说：“我不喜欢住在城里，我喜欢住在田野我的洞里。因为这样虽然贫穷但是快乐自在，比起虽然富有却要过着提心吊胆的生活来说，要好些。”

"But, dad," the boy said, " there's only ONE policeman!"

Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the “audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.
Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked“NO ADMITTANCE.” When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.
Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
At that moment , the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing,”
Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling a bass (低音) part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato (伴奏). Together, the o1d master and the young novice changed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was attracted completely.
What we can achieve on our own is hardly noteworthy (引入注意的). We try our best, but the results aren’ t exactly graceful flowing music. But with the hand of the Master, our life’s work truly can be beautiful. Next time you set out to complete great things, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing. “
