寺外烟雾燎绕，寒风刺骨。
一位状元郎跪在庙门口，请求大师收留他。大师来到门外，问：“为什么要出家？”
状元郎流着泪说：“我从秀才到举人，从举人状元，全凭文采博得功名，从未遭遇不公，可不想，考取状元达到了顶峰，却被奸人陷害，连个县令也没有当上，实在无脸回乡。”
大师听后，若有所思，轻轻地对他说：“你是国家栋梁，尘缘未尽，不应留在寺庙清静一生。”
然后转身便进了寺庙。可状元郎坚决要留在这里，跪在庙门口不起来。大师无奈，只好收留了他。
第二天一大早，大师叫醒状元，要带他下山去化缘。
二人下了山。山下有条河，沿河有一条小路向前方延伸。大师不走小路，而是走在结冰的河面上。状元郎为此感到十分不解，但不敢声张。可走着走着，二人都摔了好几个跟头，状元郎实在是憋不住了，对着大师说：“师傅，我们还是到路上走吧。”
可大师不语，依然趔趔趄趄地向前走。
状元郎又摔了一跤后，实在忍不住了，坐在冰面上对大师喊：“师傅，为何有路不走，走冰面！”
大师笑了，问他说：“徒儿有何感觉。”
“摔得疼！”状元郎生气地说。
“徒儿可知为什么摔倒。”大师接着问。
“太滑！”状元郎没有好气地说。
“徒儿知道到了疼，知道了冰面太滑，就是没有醒悟。”
大师微笑着说。“什么醒悟？”状元依然生气地问。
大师看向远方，对状元说：“冰面容易滑倒，是因没有坎坷，你的人生如冰面，从未遭遇坎坷太平坦了，早晚会摔倒，把这次遭遇当作人生的坎坷吧。”状元一愣，顿有所悟。

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen
