1954年之前，在4分钟之内跑完1英里被认为是不可能的。医生、生物学家进行实验，并用结果科学地证明，展示人类的极限，结论是人类不可能在4分钟之内跑完1英里，运动员们也验证了科学家和医生的观点，证明了他们实验的正确，l英里跑了4分零3秒，4分零2秒，但是从没有人能在4分钟跑完。从开始对1英里跑步计时以来，科学家、医生、世界顶尖运动员都已经证明了这个结论。
直到罗格?班尼斯特的出现。罗格?班尼斯特说：“4分钟跑完1英里完全是有可能的，根本不存在什么人类极限，我可以做给你们看。”说这话的时候，他是牛津大学的医学博士，他也很擅长长跑，是顶尖运动员，但是离4分钟跑完1英里还是有距离的，他的最好成绩是4分12秒，所以自然没有人把他的话当真。
但是罗格?班尼斯特坚持刻苦训练，而且有了进步，他突破了4分10秒，4分5秒，然后是4分2秒，接下来就没有再突破，像其他人一样，无法再低于4分2秒了。

直到1954年5月6日，在他的母校牛津大学，罗格?班尼斯特用了3分59秒跑完了1英里，一下子就轰动了，他登上了全世界新闻的头条，“科学遭到挑战”、“医生遭到挑战”、“将不可能变为可能”。他跑完的1英里，成为了梦想1英里。
6周后，澳大利亚运动员约翰?兰迪跑完1英里用了3分57.9秒，接下来的第二年，1955年，有37名运动员都在4分钟之内跑完了1英里，1956年，又有300名运动员突破了4分钟。
