原文：
庄子钓于濮水，楚王使大夫二人往先焉，曰：“愿以境内累矣！” 庄子持竿不顾，曰：“吾闻楚有神龟，死已三千岁矣，王巾笥而藏之庙堂之上。此 龟者，宁其死为留骨而贵，宁其生而曳尾涂中乎？”
二大夫余曰：“宁生而曳尾涂中。”
庄子曰：“往矣！吾将曳尾于涂中。”
译文：
庄子在濮河钓鱼，楚国国王派两位大夫前去请他做官，他们对庄子说：“想将国内的事务劳累您啊！”庄子拿着鱼竿没有回头看他们，说：“我听说楚国有一只神龟，死了已有三千年了，国王用锦缎包好放在竹匣中珍藏在宗庙的堂上。这只神龟，它是宁愿死去留下骨头让人们珍藏呢，还是情愿活着在烂泥里摇尾巴呢？”
两个大夫说：“情愿活着在烂泥里摇尾巴。”
庄子说：“请回吧！我要在烂泥里摇尾巴。”

狗和影子(The Dog and the Shadow)It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now, on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
