清代康熙年间,北京城里延寿寺街上廉记书铺的店堂里,一个书生模样的青年站在离账台不远的书架边看书。这时账台前一位少年购买一本《吕氏春秋》正在付书款,有一枚铜钱掉地滚到这个青年的脚边,青年斜睨眼睛扫了一下周围,就挪动右脚,把铜钱踏在脚底。不一会儿,那少年付完钱离开店堂,这个青年就俯下身去拾起脚底下的这枚铜钱。
凑巧,这个青年踏钱、取钱的一幕,被店堂里边坐在凳上的一位老翁看见了。他见此情景,盯着这个青年看了很久,然后站起身来走到青年面前,同青年攀谈,知道他叫范晓杰,还了解了他的家庭情况。原来,范晓杰的父亲在国子监任助教,他跟随父亲到了北京,在国子监读书已经多年了。今天偶尔走过延寿寺街,见廉记书铺的书价比别的书店低廉,所以进来看看。老翁冷冷地一笑就告辞离开了。
后来,范晓杰以监生的身份进入誊录馆工作,不久,他到吏部应考合格,被选派到江苏常熟县去任县尉官职。范晓杰高兴极了,便水陆兼程南下上任。到了南京的第二天,他先去常熟县的上级衙门江宁府投帖报到,请求谒见上司。当时,江苏巡抚大人汤斌就在江宁府衙,他收了范晓杰的名帖,没有接见。范晓杰只得回驿馆住下。过一天去,又得不到接见。这样一连10天。
第11天,范晓杰耐着性子又去谒见,威严的府衙护卫官向他传达巡抚大人的命令:“范晓杰不必去常熟县上任了,你的名字已经写进被弹劾的奏章,革职了。”
“大人弹劾我?我犯了什么罪”范晓杰莫名其妙,便迫不及待地问。
“贪钱”护卫官从容地回答。
“啊”范晓杰大吃一惊,自忖:我还没有到任,怎么会有贪污的赃证?一定是巡抚大人弄错了。急忙请求当面向巡抚大人陈述,澄清事实。
护卫官进去禀报后,又出来传达巡抚大人的话:“范晓杰,你不记得延寿寺街上书铺中的事了吗?你当秀才的时候尚且爱一枚铜钱如命,今天侥幸当上了地方官,以后能不绞尽脑汁贪污而成为一名戴乌纱帽的强盗吗?请你马上解下官印离开这里,不要使百姓受苦了。”
范晓杰这才想起以前在廉记书铺里遇到的老翁,原来就是正在私巡察访的巡抚大人汤斌。

The Old Cat
An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.
Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."
