据说老子骑青牛越过函谷关的时候,被函谷府衙为府尹大人发现,而答应他去作洋洋五千言的《道德经》,正在老子努力写《道德经》的时候,一位年逾百岁却鹤发童颜的老翁前来府衙找他。
这位老翁对老子略略施礼后对老子说道:“老朽听说先生您博学多才,故特来向您请教一个问题。我今年已经106岁了,然而与我同龄的人都纷纷作古而去了。你看他们,耗尽心血所追求的荣华富贵却不能享受这种富贵,努力建设好四舍屋宇却落身荒野孤坟,而费尽心力开垦出来的沃田死后也只能得一席之地。对我来说是什么情况呢。我从出生到现在,一直都能轻松度日。虽然不懂种植庄稼,但是我依然能吃上五谷杂粮;尽管我不置只砖片瓦,可我仍然能够居于华丽的房舍中。因此,我的问题是:现在我是不是可以嘲笑他们徒劳一生,而只能落到一个不能享受生活的地步呢?”听了老翁这番话,老子微微一笑,然后对身边的道童说道:“你去找一块木头和一块石头来。”当木头和石头拿来时,老子问道:“如果木头和石头只能择一个,您是选择木头还是石头呢?”“当然是木头。”老翁得意地拿起木头说道。“为什么?”老子抚须笑问。“因为这石头还没有打磨,所以它没棱没角的,我取它何用?而木头多少还能有点用处。”老翁指着石头回答。“那么大家是取石头还是取木头呢?”老子这时向身边的人询问道。
众人都回答道取木头而不取石,理由和老翁一样。听明白众人的回答后,老子回过头来问老翁:“是石头寿命长还是木头寿命长呢?”老翁犹豫了一下说:“自然是石头。”于是老子释然而笑道:“石头寿命长而人们却不择它,木头寿命短而人们却择它,只是因为它们一个对人们有用而一个对人们没用罢了。”
