短文里的台灯不但趾高气扬、骄傲自大，还喜欢到处炫耀自己，它因为自己有着漂亮的外表而瞧不起普通的蜡烛。但当骄傲的台灯坏了，而人们急需要光明的时候，主人把默默无闻的的蜡烛拿了出来,点燃了它,它的火焰依然照亮了房间里的每一个角落。而蜡烛谦虚地说：“我发出的光太淡了，的确没有台灯亮，我很惭愧，我没有对人类作出较大的贡献。”可它自己却默默地燃烧着，一直到生命之火熄灭，才悄悄地离开了人间。蜡烛虽然没有台灯那样美丽，但我们生活中离不开它,它总是发扬默默无闻、无私奉献的精神，它是多么平凡而又伟大啊！ 在赞美蜡烛的同时，我们不由地想起了孜孜以求、诲人不倦的老师，他们就象蜡烛一样永远照亮着每一位学生的心灵。
从短文中，我明白了一个道理：任何时候都不能只看外表，我们每个人都有自己的价值，每个人对社会都有不同的作用，做什么事情都要谦虚，不能骄傲，我们要向蜡烛一样燃烧着自己，照亮着别人！

狗和影子(The Dog and the Shadow)It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now, on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.

A PIGEON, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water

Just then a hunter came by with four dogs. The cat jumped nimbly up a tree, and sat down at its top, where the branches and foliage completely hid her.
"Untie your sack, Mr. Fox, untie your sack," the cat shouted to him, but the dogs had already seized him, and were holding him fast.
"Oh, Mr. Fox," shouted the cat. "You and your hundred tricks are left in the lurch. If you been able to climb like I can, you would not have lost your life."
